LAWTON'S GRAVE
Reference to the grave of Major-General Henry W. Lawton in the News of
November 26 was made in such manner as to indicate that the Indiana
legislature had failed to appropriate the money and create a commission for
the erection of a suitable marker upon the last resting place of the
celebrated military leader. The legislature of 1921 appropriated $3,500 for
the purpose, and created a monument commission which has been appointed by the
Governor. The commission met June 5 and elected officers. It met again three
months ago, conferred with the state memorial art commission upon the
character of the monument, and it is expected that within eight months
the marker will be unveiled with due ceremony. The monument must conform to
government regulations restricting the size and character of such memorials in
Arlington cemetery. The problem of suitably marking Lawton's grave with due
regard for these regulations has, it appears, given the commission some
concern, but the intent of the state is clear - it has taken steps to do its
full duty to an honored son, and the commission is proceeding with such
dispatch as the character of the assignment permits It is therefore to be
presumed that within a short time as such matters go, the former associates of
Lawton will no longer have reason to believe that somehow his native state has
forgotten his distinguished service to the country.
