Sequel: The Culbertson boys' characters as Keith and Malcolm play a siginificant role throughout the books of the Little Colonel Series after their debut in1899. William Culbertson ("Malcolm") served in World War I on a submarine chaser and in naval aviation. He trained at the Boston School of Technology. He then lived in Los Angeles, where he died prematurely and unexpectedly at age 47 of pneumonia in 1935, a few days before the world premiere in Louisville of the Little Colonel on the silver screen. Craig ("Keith") spent the war in the baloon service headquartered in California. One of his friends, Douglass Fairbanks, Sr. once accompanied him up in a baloon and they both parachuted down together. Craig was later offered $1000 a week by a movie producer to become a movie star. He declined. He lived for much of the 1920's and 30's in New York, returning to Louisville by the 1940's, where he lived in Old Louisville's Puritan Apartments. He lived until 1973 (Age 83) |
